Thankyou so much JP for this truly considered piece on the world of candles. I am absolutely delighted that Evoqua's Homecoming & Scolars & Shadows are some of your favourites within our collection. We are a tiny business who works hard to provide the best product we possibly can. Handpouring & handfinishing every single candle ourselves remains important to us and we love the scent-story that we have created for each beauty. Thankyou so much for your support, it means so much .

Most welcome Andie. Very stiff competition within this selection and as you know, others did not make the grade, so well done to you. Superb candles.

Thank you for this! Will look into Lower Lodge range … I also love candles from

wildplanetaromatherapy.co.uk particularly the ‘Warm Hug’, they use soy wax and natural essential oils. Enjoy your Sunday!

Another vote for the lovely Eileen at Wild Planet, she’s based just around the corner from me, luckily next to the best coffee spot in town! Amazing candles amongst other beautiful, handmade products x

Honestly absolutely brilliant and so timely. This only occurred to me (all the health stuff) when my local pharmacy said only buy soy. Then I read the toxic list on the back of my Gisela Graham Autumn candle and... never again! Well done JP xx

So useful, thank you! Adding La Montaña - she used to work for Guerlain and the scents are amazing. Also prices are ok. https://lamontana.co.uk/product-category/candle/

Oh fab India, that’s one I have not tried, so I’ll put it on my Christmas list. Guerlain make my favourite fragrance Habit Rouge.

I could hardly wait for this article, and; as ever, your writing did not disappoint. The care and attention to detail is wonderful. You write beautifully - wide ranging, engaging but somehow still intimate. The writings must be hard to let go….

Love the sound of House of Hera, Lower Lodge and Evoqua particularly. Your descriptions are experienced, clever, true and evocative.

Thank you.

I sincerely hope you like what you have bought. There was only space for so many brands. I have to say I do like Rituals candles too.

JP, this is just fantastic! Thank you for researching so thoroughly as I adore a scented candle but, like you say, there are many that haven't cut the mustard in the past and it can get very expensive trying to find one that you'd go back to again and again. That's why I also appreciate the wide price points you've offered up. I could never aspire to a Jo Malone candle for example, divine though it would be. To that end, I welcome the House of Hera Tria Discovery Collection as it gives a chance to find a new favourite at an excellent price. And how fab that it's your friend's company too! Love the sound of True Grace, Lower Lodge and Evoqua. And, it's not just for me. I love giving candles as gifts at Christmas so to have your recommendation, (stylish hombre that you are), means I can go off now to buy a few with gorgeous anticipation. As for the Industry reveal, wow! Thanks for sharing that too.

Happy Sunday,

Frannyx

The house of Hera Tria is an absolute must, but I should warn you, all three are fabulous and it’s very difficult to choose.

Thank you for this. I hope, Mr Great Researcher, that you might do the same with diffusers sometime.

Do you think that a scent may appear to be less effective because we get accustomed to it? Something seems to make a wow scent vanish!

It’s on the list Anne. I was originally going to include them, but it made for a book rather than a post, so next time I promise.

What a fantastic post. So much detail and information. Long time buyer of scented candles but now have new born grandchildren and very aware of not wanting anything harmful in the air.

Excited to try some of your recommendations 😊

Very interesting article about candles! I don’t think I’ve ever come across such a thorough article about candles! 🕯️

Thank you for sharing JP!😍🥰😘

Curious?🧐 🤔

What do you do with the candle jars after the candle is finished?

🙋🏼‍♀️🫶🏻Happy November!

Happy November Chriss. The glass jars I tend to send to recycling. Some of the pretty porcelain/pottery jars I keep and use to store things like cotton buds, pens etc. there are a few brands that sell refills.

Brilliant timing. I'm looking for a wonderful candle to light over the festive period (I won't mention the C word!) as I'm not going to decorate my house as usual this year so I can choose something gorgeous now 😌

Lower lodge do a great festive range, as does Evoqua, The White Company. Check out Moira’s suggestion for a festive candle too, I haven’t tried it, but she says it’s great.
