Really good advice. Thank you. I am moving after 18 years with a lot of trepidation. I love my house and have so many memories, so finding it hard to be positive but it is the right thing for us. Any advice on getting in the right mindset? X

Ok, so this is exactly how I was when I left our weatherboard home in Surrey. I knew it was the right choice, but I loved my home. I decided I needed to give our new chapter the best chance by being open to change and new possibilities and adventures. The home I was leaving wasn’t wonderful when we bought it, we made it wonderful. We could do the same again…and look! We are. You’ve got to see it as a new start, get excited about creating your perfect home and life with no mistakes in it. Make a list of all the things you loved in your last home and all the things you weren’t so keen on. Then you can use that list to concentrate on what you want and don’t want in your new life. Xxx

Such good advice. I need to get your mindset 🥰 I’m

Moving from coffee shops, transport, fabulous neighbours to somewhere a lot quieter. I am worried about the adjustment x

"I mean really sort through all your worldly possessions into what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of. Do you really want to move and possibly put in storage all the things you never intended to keep in the first place?" ---> THIS. We are a military family (both my husband and I are now retired from the US Air Force) so we've moved several times. Each time, the MOST important step has been to get rid of everything we don't want to take with us before actual moving day. We have sold things online, given them away by the truckload, or had charities come pick them up. Doing this will always make unpacking everything on the back end much smoother. All your tips are so good! I love your idea of letting all your friend & family know your new address. We always do it bit by bit but your way seems much smarter!

We have one more major move in our future: from Germany to the US. It’s going to be the mother of all moves so I’ll definitely be referencing this list!

Brilliant!! These pro tips are superb. I am saving this one for sure. Can I share a wee brag? My proudest moving moment was when car keys were lost in on moving day, and because I had inventoried EVERYTHING I was able to go to the correctly numbered box and retrieve a spare key set. HA!

Now that’s a real pro moment! Hats off to you!

Ohh this is fantastic ! Military operation perfectly set out here . I was looking for anything you hadn’t covered as moved many time ourselves , but ..no ! I learnt that I’m really going to have to be strong with the chucking out next time ! The loft is really organised thanks to just keeping on top of it really and not keeping too much . Cliff is expert at sorting and chucking ..thank god ! You should write a book on how to move ! This is so useful to the masses Xx it doesn’t take away the stress , but certainly helps to be more than totally organised JP . Brilliant xx

Now that’s an idea! I still have not mastered the chucking out part. We’re going to have to have a yard sale Nic!

That would be amazing ! And a good way to meet the neighbours ! X

So much that’s so useful, thank you! Your advice about sorting thru everything first might be the most important of all and - in my excitement - easiest to overlook…you tell yourself it’ll be done in the first fortnight when you move in, but of course life takes over

Such good advice! We were really lucky with our removal company last time. They packed and labelled every box and I had a floor plan for each house and where the boxes needed to go. Although they did have to order an extra van (making it 3) because they’d underestimated what was in our loft!! We got rid of so much stuff but alas 5 years later our cellars, loft and garage are full again. I need Stacey Solomon to pop round and empty the house haha! Good luck unpacking 🤩

Love this helpful advice. Having just left our house of 17 years I forgot how stressful it was! Because there is a gap before we move into our new house we are staying with relatives, I actually think I’m not sure I could have moved in on the same day. Still recovering a week later. It’s not to be underestimated what it takes especially of you’ve been somewhere a while.
