Oh my goodness that’s such a romantic but sad tale.

The number of dogs that friends/ relatives had that “ went to live on a farm” , I can’t believe, and with far less justification than your parents had. I’d love to go back and give them a slap ( I speak as someone with an ancient blind grumpy Yorkie who absolutely runs the house, people and other animals!

I enjoyed that story so much. A wonderful sense of place and the joy of first, innocent love. The only thing I query (memory wise!) is that you thought of yourself as a character in Bronte novel. At FIVE??? Still, I get your point.

Oh, I wasn’t suggesting for a second that I had read Jane Eyre at that age, but that in later life, in retrospect, my slightly over-dramatic mind was like it.

Aww this friendship seems wonderful at such a young age! I wonder how his life has turned out? I had a similar childhood here in the UK of being left to get on with it. Heavenly

Always wondered. Yes, there was something special about being left to our own devices as kids. Made us very imaginative.

This was a lovely story JP. I can relate in some ways with a friendship I had when I was five and then we moved (not different countries). I cried for days, we had so much fun and then I was alone. I do believe I changed as a person at that point (not to be too dramatic!). You moved a lot more but I wondered if you felt your personality changed then?

Interesting, I think it did yes. I think I became slightly more guarded when it came to friendships. I became very shy.

That's exactly what happened to me. I was such a free spirit and remember so much, we were really naughty in a very innocent way! Always up to something. And then I didn't know how to make friends, I went very shy. I've always struggled since then. Thank you for replying x

I should add ...unless I've got a glass of wine, then I have a masters degree in making friends 😂

How gorgeous this piece of writing is, JP. Such visual descriptions, I could picture the houses and that stark hot landscape so vividly. But most of all I felt my heart squeeze at your young self, so in love, carrying the weight of it all in your little big heart.

Thank you for sharing this.

Thank you Franny. It’s interesting isn’t, we often think that young children have very little on their minds. I think I felt things quite deeply, still do.

It’s actually a very recently re-written chapter of a book I started many years ago and never finished. Chapter four, to be precise. I plan to finish it this time, so definitely more to come.
