The Instagram Home Renovation Trends That Will Lose You Money
But, does it really matter if they bring you inordinate amounts of joy? Another bumper edition not to be missed!
Welcome to HOME & HORT. The place where we talk about home and garden renovation and design, with a little bit of life, love and funny things thrown in for good measure. If you've found your way over by some miracle but are not yet subscribed, let me help you with that. Come and join us.
Instagram is awash with fanciful ‘dream homes’ full of cinema rooms, outdoor kitchens, spiral staircase wine cellars and enormous master bedroom suites complete with a room just for shoes. We’re often made to feel somewhat inadequate if our home doesn’t measure up. We’ve all felt it at some point. My desire for a secret door to a hidden pantry of dreams shows no sign of abating. I had no idea I needed one until The Gram mercilessly showed me the error of my ways and now I can’t rest. It must come to pass.
But, very often those over-the-top trends are only appropriate if you happen to own a ten-bedroom mansion on a couple of acres. It’s the only way you’d get your money back. Sacrificing much needed space and spare rooms in the average home for these crazy things can not only be a complete waste of money, you could be doing severe damage to the value of your home.
Two weeks ago I told you about all the projects you can do in your home and garden that will actually add value. Today, as promised is the complete antithesis of that. I’m going to be exploring all the possible home renovation ideas and trends that won’t add a single penny to the sale price of your home and could leave you rather out of pocket.
But does it really matter? At the end of the day any home improvements should be about making your home work better for you, creating a healthier, happier environment while you live there. Your home should suit you and not some imaginary future buyer. However, if you are considering what to do to your home in order to increase it’s sale price, and particularly if you plan to list your home any time soon, then there are many ideas that are popular on social media that could be the worst thing you can do.
So before you paint everything pink, buy that jumbo-sized jacuzzi, spend a small fortune on a dream kitchen or landscape your garden with porcelain tiles, you might want to have a read of this first!
I must point out, rather sheepishly, that some of the things I list below are projects we are actually considering for our barn conversion, shoot me now, so yes I am just as guilty as the rest of you, but for each one I will explain my reasoning and the mitigating factors. I promise I haven’t lost the plot.
The rest of this post is for the amazing paid members of HOME & HORT who make all of this possible. Without them there is no way I can afford to spend this much time researching and writing.
