Hey everyone, a slightly early Midweek Musings as there’s an important, but very short email arriving in your inbox tomorrow evening. I’ll explain more below.
How’s your January going? I have to say for me it’s been quite a busy month and there’s been a lot going on behind the scenes here in old knackered barn and pigsty land. Plans are afoot for the house and garden transformation, but progress is slow mainly because of our wretched district council. I’ll be explaining all once I know more.
I’m not one to wish away time, but the dreary grey and rain we’ve had in the south of England hasn’t helped with morale. I’m not necessarily longing for spring, I’d just love a little stretch of bright, cold and crisp days. Anyone else?
We have a tradition that we carry out every January on the sunniest day of the month. We put on our cosiest, thickest winter coats, grab a bottle of fizz and venture out into the garden. We then toast to the spring, the year ahead and for health and happiness. We actually only managed an hour or so of sunshine the other day, but we grabbed our chance. Why don’t you try it this week if you get a little blue sky?
It can be so difficult to keep your spirits up at this time of year, so I thought I would bring a positive action piece I wrote last January from behind the paywall, so that everyone can read it. You never know, it might help if you’re feeling a bit low.
Five free ways to fight the January funk!
January. It’s the month that a lot of people seem to want to skip. The month that seems to drag on for eternity; the one in which we are all broke because of the Christmas spend extravaganza. The weather is shit and anything that was remotely fun, joyful or exuberant disappeared into a dark dingy corner of the attic along with the baubles, tinsel and half-working lights. But, in my quest to not wish away time, as I wrote about in my new year post and to search out glimmers of excitement, I’m determined to put the most uneventful, snooze fest of a month to good use!

SAVE THE DATE!
In other news, I’ll be doing my first ever live here on Substack this Thursday at 4.30pm UK time. I’d love for you to join me. It’s just a little test live, but I need all the support I can get. There will be a very short email tomorrow about it all. If you’re new to us here, then hello and welcome, but also, there aren’t usually more than two emails a week, so don’t worry, I won’t be clogging up your inbox on a regular basis.
The Creepiest Thing I’ve Ever Seen at a Garden Centre

We went to a garden nursery over the weekend, one we haven’t visited before. I was fine until I saw this man/figure. I thought he was a member of staff at first. You KNOW he comes alive at night! What is he carrying in his pocket? I put it on Notes the other day and a very funny dialogue ensued.
I’ll be back tomorrow with news about my live and how you can join. Cheers everyone.
I planted some sweet pea seeds ( soaked for 24 hours) then, as I saw on a video, put between damp kitchen towel in some takeaway boxes until they were just sprouting then planted… (it does really speed up the process!) The promise of wigwams of fragrant sweet peas to cut and adorn your table or to give away posies to friends and neighbours really cheers this benighted month 😊
Well my body decided to force me to slow down this January. Bloomin virus followed now by a chest infection. I hate January at the best of times but this has been the pits! Walks are out - I think I saw a bit of sun one day but I blinked and it was gone! My bed has been my saviour!
