How to Style Your Table Like a Pro
My top table styling tips revealed, a video tutorial, plus an autumn table design.
Once upon a time I used to spend days, if not weeks preparing dinner party menus and ever more theatrical table top designs to impress and delight our guests. Everything had to be perfect and I would run myself ragged slaving away making sure of it. I’d get so very stressed with it all, which in turn made my husband twitchy and that can’t have been conducive for a fun night for our friends.
It might explain why sometimes we didn’t get an invite back - not bitter I promise! It made me realise that all that really matters is that everyone has a great time and that the food is really delicious. There’s a difference between wanting your table to look pretty and making your guests feel like they can’t possibly ever invite you back because they can’t compete. Nowadays I’m a sucker for a simple, hearty meal, a laid back vibe with lots of laughter and good company. For a spur of the moment supper (spur of the moment, me? Who even am I?) with friends in 2024 there will be no more than place mats, plates and cutlery. You might be lucky and get given a napkin, but it could just as well be a sheet of kitchen roll. Who cares as long as the lasagna’s good, right?
But, there are occasions when the table styling calls for a tad more than a couple of candles and the salt and pepper mill. Plus, I can’t give in too much to the dumbing down of almost everything these days. Christmas is coming up and you’ve got to go crazy for that, but I also think autumn and winter generally lend themselves to table faffing more. During the lighter, warmer months when we are usually (not so much this year) outside, just a blue sky, the lush greens of the garden and a couple of little vases of flowers will do the job. Inside, on a cold, dark and rainy night though, that requires more thought to create an atmosphere and sense of occasion. So here’s what to do to keep it simple, yet elegant and a few things you definitely shouldn’t do!
